This morning the Stowmarket War Memorial Gates at the entrance to the Recreation Ground have been temporarily removed for repair and refurbishment by Dorothea Restorations. The memorial gates and supporting stonework will be fully restored to continue the legacy of this important Grade II listed war memorial.

The conservation work will be carried out in line with the specialist guidance published by Historic England and War Memorials Trust. Dorothea Restorations are the UK’s leading specialist in conservation of architectural metalwork, and will handle this important piece of Stowmarket’s history with great care and respect.

The memorial gates, which are in their centenary year, were originally erected in 1921 to commemorate the Stowmarket residents who lost their lives in WWI. You can read more about the history of the gates in this February article.

The gates will be reinstalled in time for Remembrance Sunday 2021, we’re looking forward to seeing the finished result.
