Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we marked Remembrance Sunday a little differently in Stowmarket this year. The event usually compromises of a parade from Red Gables, Ipswich Road to the Parish Church of St Peter and St Mary for the service. After the church service the parade forms up in the Market Place, marching to the Recreation Ground, Finborough Road for a short wreath laying service at the Memorial Gates.

This year a scaled-down ceremony took place at the Recreation Ground Memorial Gates on Sunday morning, with only a handful of invited guests allowed to attend due to the new lockdown rules. Representatives of the Stowmarket branch of the Royal British Legion, St Peter’s & St Mary’s Parish Church and the Town Council paid tribute to those who have lost their lives during conflict. The commemorations were led by Rev’d Michael Eden, with a two minute silence observed at 11.00am, and representatives from communities across Stowmarket laying wreaths at the Memorial gates to remember the fallen.

The service was streamed on the ‘Stowmarket Live’ YouTube channel to ensure those who would usually attend the Remembrance Sunday commemorations could watch them from the safety of their home. Armistice Day on Wednesday, 11th November 2020, will be observed by a further invitation only ceremony at the Recreation Ground Memorial Gates at 11.00am, but please join us in spirit for this moment of contemplation and reflection wherever you may be.
