What is a Virtual Litter Pick? 
Is it like a video game?
No, not quite!
The Superhero Litter Pick is a ‘virtual’ event, but this doesn’t mean it isn’t ‘real’. Instead, it is up to each individual participant or family to choose the location they want to litter pick. The event will happen at 9.30 – 10.30 am on Saturday 26th September with everyone litter picking their chosen spot at the same time, thus creating a ‘virtual’ event and a fantastic community effort!
Why Virtual?
With the success of virtual events during lockdown, from Clap for Carers and Zoom quizzes to virtual races and House Party parties, we have been able to take a fresh look at our events and make them socially distancing friendly. At the time of planning the event we were very much still in lockdown with the future looking uncertain. By organising a ‘virtual’ event, we drastically reduce the likelihood of cancellation.
Town council community litter picks have traditionally been held at the Recreation Ground. While any litter pick is excellent, we would like people to choose a place that means something to them. If you walk down your street and see litter then we want you to feel empowered to make a difference in your immediate vicinity in a short amount of time.
Who can take part?
Absolutely anyone! The beauty of this being a virtual event means that each participant or family can decide where they would like to litter pick. If you have any specific accessibility needs, you can choose somewhere that you feel safe and comfortable.
Where shall I litter pick?
Some ideas of where to litter pick include:
- Near your home/street
- Your favourite park or walk (find parks in Stowmarket here)
- Where you work

What if other groups are litter picking the same area?
Give a wave, say hello and maintain social distancing!

How will it work?
We have been working with our fabulous operations team to ensure we can enable as many people as possible to litter pick with us. We will provide all the necessary equipment: litter pickers, bags and hi-vis (if required). We ask that you provide your own gloves.
- Register using this form
- We will send you a couple of safety briefings and forms for you to read, sign and send back
- Organise a time to pop down and pick up your equipment
- Choose your superhero costume (encouraged but not essential)!
- Litter pick time!
- Dispose of the rubbish (information will be given to participants nearer the time)
- Upload your photos to our photo competition
- Return your equipment
- Claim superhero bragging rights!
Environmental Impact
It’s an unf
ortunate fact that, even before the increase in disposable PPE and related litter, we had a litter problem. At a time when working for, not against, the environment is so critical, getting up and involved in any type of environmentally friendly work is an excellent way to help take care of our planet.
The choices we make now will have an impact for many generations, and that is why we have designed this event to be completely family-friendly. Getting children and young people involved is the best way to help them grow up with an understanding about how to care for the planet.
