After an evening of thanks, and goodbyes from Councillor David Child Town Mayor 25/26 and his Consort Councillor Maria Childs as they rounded up their excellent year representing our town at an amazing number of functions and civic duties. I cannot thank them enough for their support and guidance in preparing me to fill some big shoes (and a small hat).

My Mayoral year began at pace. Following my ceremony on the Wednesday evening, my first official engagement took place the very next morning at a Citizenship Ceremony. It was a well-attended event, expertly overseen by the registrar team. It was a pleasure to meet people from such diverse backgrounds, all of whom had worked incredibly hard to achieve their citizenship. The pride on their faces as they received their certificates was clear to see, and even more so as they posed for photographs with their families beside the King’s portrait. I felt truly honoured when some asked me to join them.

I was also delighted to be invited by Ipswich Mayor, Stefan Long, to attend his charity event, which included a guided historical tour of the town centre—something I was particularly excited about. It was fascinating to see familiar buildings through a new lens, learning about their significance, history, and the stories behind them. The tour guides were exceptionally knowledgeable, and Louise and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I would highly recommend these tours to anyone. The evening concluded with a lovely meal and fundraising at The Maharani.

It was a privilege to lay a wreath and speak at the memorial service marking the anniversaries of Operation TELIC (The Iraq War) and Operation Granby (The Gulf War). The service was well attended by local dignitaries and military representatives, alongside veterans and members of the community. These occasions are always poignant and reflective, and it is important that we continue to remember and honour those who have given their lives in service. My thanks go to everyone involved in organising and supporting such a meaningful event.

On Saturday, my Consort and I attended Stow Fest, where we were blessed with glorious weather, fantastic music, and a vibrant atmosphere. It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves. As we walked around, we were greeted warmly by residents, and it was especially lovely to see children proudly showing off their face paint—the young girl with the mermaid design was particularly delighted! It was also encouraging to see local stalls raising funds for a variety of worthwhile causes.

Of course, it seemed only right that the Mayor should get involved in some of the activities, including football darts, laser quest, and even one of the sponsor’s money-grabbing games—very reminiscent of The Crystal Maze (“will you start the fans please!”). Events like this are made successful by the community itself, alongside the hard work of those who organise them. We are incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful venues in our town to host these family-friendly events.
