The Town Council commissioned Hallwood Associates to undertake a canopy cover survey. This meant surveying the current trees to determine how much of the town has canopy cover. The results came back that Stowmarket had a below average 14% canopy cover. The national average is 16% and the ideal is between 20-30%.
The Town Council has pledged to raise the canopy cover to an above-average 22% and we are well on our way to achieving that goal. In 2021 an i‐Tree Ecosystem Analysis of Stowmarket showed that the town’s canopy cover, provided by over 23,300 trees, is at 19.7%. Read the i‐Tree Ecosystem Analysis report in full.
The Town Council has also committed to planting 1000 trees within the town. So far we have planted 900 saplings and young trees with the help of local community groups, businesses and volunteers.
An “on the ground” tree audit of the town was undertaken by Hallwood Associates and volunteers from the Suffolk Tree Wardens to identify different tree species, their maturity and opportunities for further tree planting. The intention is that by working in partnership with local bodies and local people the town can increase canopy cover and enhance the natural environment for future generations in order to store carbon, provide shade in increasing temperatures and benefit the town’s wildlife.
As part of the Stowmarket Town Eco Trees Project, annual community tree planting days take place each year with the help of Community Champions – passionate local volunteers, including individuals, families community groups, and businesses.
Trees require some maintenance during the first 2 years of their life, including watering and pruning. We are always looking for volunteers to donate a few hours a month.
