One of the most historic buildings in Stowmarket, Milton House is owned and managed by the Town Council. It is the main interface between the Town Council and the residents of Stowmarket and provides office accommodation for a variety of organisations, both those working in the public and private sectors.
Birth, marriage and death registration services
The Stowmarket Registration Service is the principal tenant of the building providing birth, marriage and death registration services for the local community. The Registrars conduct many ceremonies with the John Milton Room providing a very desirable venue for ceremonies, the grounds of Milton House provides a beautiful backdrop for photographs. Mid Suffolk Citizens Advice
Mid Suffolk Citizens Advice occupies the oldest part of the building, Oak Cottage, which dates backs to the 16th Century, under an agreement and financial support from the Council.
John Milton’s Mulberry Tree
In the grounds of Milton House sits a large Mulberry tree which is said to be the descendant of a tree which was planted by the Poet, John Milton. Milton was a frequent visitor to the Vicarage in the early 18th century. Tradition has it that the girth of the tree was, at one time, 10 feet and the Reverend AGH Hollingsworth, the incumbent at the time is reputed to have made 10 gallons of wine from its fruit.
