As expected August was a quieter month as people have been on holiday. But Heather and I attended a reception held at Tesco for Ukrainian refugees who are currently living with hosts locally. It must be difficult finding yourself in a strange country with many of your close family still living in a country at war. The reception was a chance for the refugees to meet both local people and some of their fellow Ukrainians who also find themselves a long way from home.
A second occasion we were both pleased to attend was the Churches Together event held on the green at St Peters and St Mary’s Church. The day was a collaboration by all the churches in town and was very well attended. Helpers from the different churches put on cream teas, hot dogs and burgers as well as stalls. Run by volunteers, for anyone to attend, and all for free this was such a brilliant example of what people in Stowmarket do for one another.
We also headed to the Stowmarket Library for the monthly Tea and Tech session run by Communities Together East Anglia.
We continue behind the scenes organising some charity events at The Aviary in Cedars Park Community Centre, including the Mayor’s Quiz Night and an Italian evening, all in aid of my chosen charity Greenlights at The Mix.
As we go through September and into October the diary dates pick up and we will soon be involved in remembrance events, and then a blink of an eye the festive season will be upon us.
